A Travel Journal for the Road

I’ve decided to start something new and fun for 2020 - a travel journal! In our fast-paced world, there’s something special about slowing down and recording your travels in a journal. Plus, time can become distorted when on the road, and writing and documenting can help link your experiences to exact dates and people and places.

For me, the idea started when one of my clients gave me a beautiful leather journal for Christmas with the inscription of my name and, “My Life in 2020.” I’ve been trying to think of a great way to use it, because I don’t ever want to let a good journal go to waste! And last week, while I was on my first trip of the year, it came to me - I want to do a travel journal! I’m always making notes of great things I see in small towns and collecting fun mementos, so this will be the perfect way to put everything together and really capture the experience.

I know I want to be able to incorporate photos into this journal as well. My friend Lauren recently storied about her new portable printer that prints 2 x 3 photos with a sticker background, directly from your phone. I loved the idea and knew this would be easy to take with me as I travel. So one Amazon order and two days later, here we are. I’m so excited! This will be such a fun way to document all the people and places that are part of my journey this year.

And speaking of travels...I’m headed to Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas next week! So, if you know of any great places to stop or people to meet, let me know! And chances are, they’ll probably get a place in my travel journal.

WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN TRAVEL JOURNAL?

A few tips for journaling on the road:

  • Keep your plane, train, concert, and national park tickets! They make for excellent journal flair.

  • Collect found objects and imagery and use them to make creative collages. Think souvenirs — flyers, stickers, matchbooks, maps, postcards, coasters, etc.

  • Record details like dates, weather, towns and parks visited, songs or playlists, trails hiked, recipes, hotel room numbers, or Airbnb stays.

  • Draw landscapes, plants, memorable images, and architecture. Consider adding things like pressed flowers or leaves in your journal.

  • Bring different colors of pens or pencils for journal artwork. Or show off your calligraphy or handlettering skills.

  • Stone rubbings from historical markers or architectural elements are fun and make great entries.

  • Bring washi tape or a glue stick. And, in this case, a pocket-sized printer.

Get creative and document what inspires you! Here’s where your experiences can live on well beyond your trip.
