Episode 155 // Brett Hubka with A Mural Movement of Clay Center

On today’s episode of the Rural Revival podcast we’re with Brett Hubka with A Mural Movement of Clay Center, Kansas (pop. 4,123).

Brett's sharing how a simple service project around one mural turned into a movement that has now brought 33 murals to their town. When this all started, the community had no public art. Now they're drawing in artists from around the nation and expanding their efforts beyond Clay Center to the entire county, and Brett's here to tell you all about it.

This is such a fun project and it’s great to see how the community has rallied around this. I'm excited to share that the new grain bin mural that Brett mentioned is now finished and it is incredible!

I also want to give a shout out to Brett and the Rotary for their leadership of this project. 33 murals in four years is A LOT and they've put a lot of time and effort into this, and it's really great to see all their hard work paying off.

Check out the podcast and make Clay Center a part of your travel plans this summer! This is something really fun to experience and you will not be disappointed!

“The response was overwhelmingly positive. And that’s what started the snowball to turn one mural into 33.”

- Brett Hubka

“We wanted to come back to a small town and raise our kids in a small town. The values that come from a small town are special to us — having good friends, a great church, good schools, all those things — and we believe we have that right here in Clay Center.”

- Brett Hubka

“It’s been so rewarding to help other communities across the state start their own mural projects. Just trying to be an ambassador for our project and helping other communities across Kansas and the midwest get these off the ground. When you go to an urban center, such as Kansas City, you might see a mural on every block. But you don’t see as many in rural towns across Kansas and the midwest. So if we can help explain to folks what we’ve done and had success with and it helps some other communities then I think we’ve done a good job.”

- Brett Hubka

“In rural Kansas and rural America, most of our small towns are very alike. We’re ag based, and our committee decided we want ag in our murals for sure, but we can’t do every single one with a tractor and a combine. So we have a lot of Americana, veterans, animals — there’s something for everybody.”

- Brett Hubka

“We really think that it’s become a destination for tourists, people that enjoy and appreciate art, as well as artists themselves to come to Clay Center. It’s been really cool to see this transform from a project where we couldn’t get an artist to come to Clay Center because they had never heard of it, and now we have artists reaching out to us.”
